Service and achievements

At the age of 14 Joe joined his local Northbridge Progress Association. He was the founder of the community newsletter “The 202” which is named after the local bus route.

Elected as the 59th President of the University of Sydney Students Representative Council.

Joe joins the Liberal Party of NSW and is elected to office.

After hard fought elections Joe is elected President of the New South Wales Young Liberals and becomes a member of the State Executive of the Liberal Party of NSW.

Joe wins Liberal Party endorsement to be the candidate for the Federal Seat of North Sydney. The seat was held by Independent local icon Ted Mack who soon after announces his retirement.

The Howard Liberal/National Coalition Government is swept to office on March 2 and Joe Hockey becomes the freshman member for North Sydney.

Apart from joining House of Representatives Committees on Economics and the Environment, the Prime Minister invites Joe to Chair the Sydney Airport Community Forum

The Howard Government is re-elected with a reduced majority and Joe Hockey is promoted into the Ministry as one of Australia’s youngest ever ministers.

With the re-election of the Howard Government with an increased majority, Joe is made Minister for Small Business and Tourism. He delivers major reforms for small business including online one stop shop initiatives and simplified regulation.

With the last re-election of the Howard Government Joe is invited to build a new department responsible for the delivery of all Federal Government health and welfare services.

Prime Minister Howard invites Joe to become Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Public Service.

The Howard Government loses office and Joe becomes Opposition Spokesman on Health and Manager of Opposition Business in the House of Representatives.

Joe loses a ballot to become the Parliamentary Leader of the Liberal Party, to future Prime Ministers Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull.

The Abbott Coalition narrowly loses the Federal Election to Labor’s Julia Gillard.

The Rudd Government is defeated by the Abbott Liberal National Coalition and Joe Hockey becomes Treasurer of the Commonwealth.

In addition to his role as Treasurer Joe becomes the Chair of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors.

Tony Abbott is defeated by Malcolm Turnbull for leadership of the Liberal Party. Subsequently Joe resigns from Parliament.

Joe Hockey takes up his new role as Ambassador for Australia to the United States of America.
