Professor Chris O'Brien

Chris O’Brien’s life was an inspiration to both his colleagues in the medical profession and to all Australians.

His skill as a doctor was only equalled by his genuine compassion and concern for others.

He saved so many lives. Where medical science meant that this was not possible he provided comfort to those whose future was bleak.

When he became a patient himself his focus remained so much on other cancer sufferers. This is amply demonstrated by the fact that he dedicated the last two years to ensuring that the Lifehouse Cancer Centre in Sydney became a reality.

It, and the lives that it will save, will be his enduring legacy.

Today I have lost a friend and a neighbour and our Nation has lost someone who was truly exceptional.

To Gail and their children I extend my sincere condolences.

He will be missed and remembered by all those whose lives he touched and made better by being amongst us.
